Léon Bellefleur
/1910-2007
Léon Bellefleur is internationally recognized for his contributions to abstract art in the 20th century. His interest in art emerged early. He studied at École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal from 1929 - 1936 and was immersed in the Quebec avant guard among such artists as Paul-Émile Borduas, Alfred Pellan and others. Soon after, Bellefleur became focused on ideas surrounding Surrealism. Through this influence he became an early adopter of Automatism, leading to his Abstract Expressionist works from the 1950s onwards. His paintings are celebrated for their crystal-like forms, prismatic colour and visual dynamism.
