Halin de Repentigny’s paintings come out of a life deeply connected with the land. Based in Dawson City, Yukon he paints the landscape from direct experience, working outdoors in challenging conditions where light shifts quickly and weather defines access. Years spent exploring the region and living off grid in the bush give Repentigny’s work a perspective that is lived rather than observed.
Now, after more than forty years of painting, his work carries a quiet confidence. Surfaces are built through layered colour and expressive brushwork, creating rich and luminous textures without ever being overstated. Light remains central to everything he does. As he says, “ The right light is like a jewel. I know a painting works when it creates its own light.” It is Repentigny’s attention to light and atmosphere that fills each painting their own distinct expression.
For many collectors, appreciation of Repentigny’s painting is rooted in a desire for a greater connection to nature, for solitude and for the thrill of exploring new places. Repentigny’s compositions of the Yukon are symbolic of these values and are a major part of why his work has achieved international acclaim.
