This exhibition of ink drawings from 2004-2015 represent a pivitol moment in Ashoona's career and contemporary Inuit art. Through this decade Shuvinai Ashoona's now iconic visual language was being developed into what is now internationally celebrated in exhibitions such as the Venice Bienalle(2022). In this collection we see a shift from documenting place and people to fully articulating her unique perspective.

At the centre of Ashoona’s practice is her extraordinary command of ink. Working primarily with black Fineliner pen, she developed exceptional control over line, using intricate hatching and long, continuous strokes to create remarkable texture and precision. Even after introducing coloured pencil, ink remained the structural foundation of her drawings. Her drawings move effortlessly between reality and imagination. Humans, animals, landscapes, celestial bodies, and English and Inuktitut text exist in dynamic relationship, creating expansive worlds that are rooted in Inuit knowledge while reaching far beyond it.

Untitled (Figure, Eyes in Hair), presented in this exhibition, references Ashoona’s celebrated The World in Her Eyes (2011), a landmark work in the TD Bank Corporate Art Collection, the world’ s most significant corporate collection of Inuit art. The drawing is a defining expression of Ashoona’s visionary universe, where portraiture, Arctic life, and celestial forms converge to explore multiple worlds and shifting perceptions.
