Madrona Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Clayton Anderson.
Drawing inspiration from iconic Canadian landscape painters such as E.J. Hughes, Emily Carr and Lawren Harris, Anderson’s paintings speak to a lifelong connection to the richly varied BC landscape. His paintings convey an authentic experience of place through his mastery of form, colour and light. Focusing on the coves, inlets, forests, islands, and mountains he knows best, Anderson captures the thrill of discovering unfamiliar places and the overwhelming solitude of being in nature.

In works such as “Soaring” and “Thunderheads Over Bowen Island”, Anderson explores the immense power of nature through different perspectives. Tree trunks and limbs provide a sense of scale, emphasizing expansive panoramas of forest, sea, and sky, while immense clouds and distant horizons heighten the feeling of distance and monumentality. His masterful use of colour, particularly in “The Eagle’s View”, creates depth and a sense of weightlessness through subtle shifts of blue-violet, greens, greys, and rusts.

Born and raised in West Vancouver, Anderson has spent more than 40 years developing a distinctive contemporary approach to the landscapes of the West Coast, particularly the Sunshine Coast, Desolation Sound, and Vancouver Island. His paintings invite the viewer into an intimate experience of iconic subjects, encouraging us to slow down, look closer, and rediscover the familiar landscape.
