Alex Colville: Works on Paper
/November 15 - 29
Opening Reception: November 15, 1-3 PM
Alexander Colville is one of Canada’s most celebrated artists. Over the course of his career he became a master of inviting viewers into his distinct perspective. Most often categorized as a realist, Colville’s work speaks to something far beyond representations of landscapes, objects or people. The power in his work rests on the emotional tension he achieves. This tension is often quiet and indirect but overwhelming in effect.
Le Chien d’or - 10.25 x 24.75 inches - Silkscreen, 25/70 - 1987 - SOLD
This exhibition focuses on works on paper, both serigraphs and studies for major works. Printmaking was an important part of Colville’s artistic practice. His first print was completed in 1955 and continued throughout his career. He worked exclusively in serigraphs throughout his career becoming a master printmaker. Prints such as Stove are among his best known compositions.
The studies selected for this exhibition focus on Colville’s meticulous process; often working through dozens of sketches, resolving balance and colour before working it up into a larger scale finished painting. These sketches are intimate glances into the artist’s process, often showing the geometry where focal points rest and the remarcable consideration he puts into every element shown.
