 Artist and Educator Gordon Smith is one of the most influential voices in contemporary art on Canada's west coast. Originally from England, Smith moved to Winnipeg in 1934. He studied at Winnipeg School of Art under Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald (1937 - 40), Vancouver School of Art (1944) under Jack Shadbolt and B.C. Binning and the California School of Fine Art (1951). His first major solo show was at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1944. Since that time he has exhibited his work around the globe. His paintings are found in major public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Museum of Modern Art (NY), The Smithsonian (DC), Victoria and Albert Museum(UK) among others.
