Madrona Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas.

This collection features work that builds on his acclaimed Coppers from the Hood series which is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Coppers from the Hood references copper shields, which are a symbol of wealth in the North Pacific indigenous community, along with the automobile, signifying social and economic status in contemporary society.

Yahgulanaas’ mixed media paintings are also highlighted in this exhibition, creating an impressive cross section of his career thus far.

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas was born in 1954 in Prince Rupert and grew up on Haida Gwaii. He is a descendant of iconic artists Isabella and Charles Edenshaw, and Delores Churchill. Large sculptural works by Yahgulanaas are part of the public art collection of the Vancouver International Airport, City of Vancouver, City of Kamloops and University of British Columbia. His work is collected internationally in both private and public collections, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
