Josh Wallace: Midnight Walk

April 6 - 13
Opening Reception: April 6, 5-7 PM
Artist in Attendance

Madrona Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by Josh Wallace.

Midnight Walk is a collection of works centred around the theme of observation and finding different stories or meaning in the day-to-day, whether it's the people we meet or places we go. Wallace creates a beautiful tension in his paintings, letting viewers unpack stories and mentally wander through the work, going on a sort of midnight walk of their own.

Artist Statement:

Midnight Walk is informed by a period of my life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Painting for me is a compulsive act driven by the curiosity behind painting an idea in my mind. When creating a painting, I believe its my responsibility to stimulate the viewer with either subject matter or approach. For that reason, I try to have my paintings to be open ended and ambiguous, so viewers are able to have their own interpretation and relationship with the painting. My paintings are inspired by a swathe of artists, but particularly Caravaggio, Lucian Freud, and Alex Colville. The idea that painting allows me to connect with an activity that people of the past took part in is exciting to me.
