Pitseolak Ashoona

1904 - 1983

Cape Dorset, Nunavut

Pitseolak was born on Nottingham Island in the Hudson Strait and spent most of her youth moving with her family among traditional camps near the present day communities of Cape Dorset and Iqaluit.  During the course of her influential career as an artist she created more than 7,000 drawings depicting her experiences in traditional Inuit culture and life.  Pitseolak's first images were published in a Cape Dorset print collection in 1960 and appeared in each subsequent collection until her death in 1983.  Her work is included in numerous private and public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
